Helene Weigel has left behind an incredible legacy – through her own work and that of her husband Bertolt Brecht, who grew alongside her and could only make theatre history with her.

Using impressive archive material, the film follows the convinced communist, acting icon, and free spirit from her early days in theater to her escape from the Nazi regime to the founding and management of the Berliner Ensemble. The result is a powerful portrait that finally puts the “woman at Brecht‘s side” in the spotlight.

The documentary film HELENE WEIGEL – INSTRUCTIONS FOR A REVOLUTION fills a significant gap, for shockingly little is remembered of the vast scope that Helene Weigel fought to secure for herself, for the art of acting, and for cultural policy. It offers a glimpse into this daring, fast-paced, tragic life, which is full of upheavals and unshakeable energy. It is high time for the story of this Jewish woman from Vienna, who became a woman of extremes.
