Based on Saša Stanišić’s 2019 autofictional novel Herkunft: Writer Aleksandar returns to Višegrad, Bosnia and Herzegovina, to take his strong-willed grandmother Kristina, who has dementia, to a nursing home. But Kristina firmly believes they are setting off for her native village of Oskoruša. Their road trip becomes an unexpected journey into the past, intertwining Aleksandar’s memories of fleeing the Bosnian War as a child and growing up as a refugee in Heidelberg with Kristina’s return to her hometown.
A tragicomic story about past and present, memory and forgetting, the impossibility of ever truly arriving, and the first and most decisive coincidence in our biography: our origin.
